An LPC (licence proficiency check) is required to revalidate or renew a pilot's licence, type rating and instrument rating; an OPC (operator proficiency check) verifies a pilot's competence to operate for a specific operator. Both are recurring checks under EASA and UK CAA rules.
An LPC is the check used to revalidate or renew a pilot's ratings — type rating, class rating and instrument rating — so that their licence remains valid. It is conducted by an examiner and follows the content required by the applicable licensing rules.
An OPC verifies that a pilot can operate the operator's aircraft in the operator's environment, covering normal, abnormal and emergency procedures relevant to that operation. It is an operator requirement rather than a licensing one, though the two are often combined in a single session.
LPCs and OPCs generate assessment records and reports that must be captured accurately and retained defensibly. Waypoint models LPC and OPC events out of the box, captures competency grades and narratives on iPad, and produces tamper-evident, audit-trailed reports — see report writing software.
